What's in my Beach Bag

When it comes to packing for the beach, I consider myself an expert ( not so much when I'm packing for a Mainland trip! Ha! ) Over the years I've managed to figure out what exactly I need for a beach day. And I have a lot of beach days. I honestly head out to the beach at least 3-5 times a week, sometimes more.  Now, this can mean under an hour or all day long depending on the surf conditions, the tides, wind conditions, unexpected rain showers ( this happens a lot in Hawaii ), murky water, or work ( oh ya, that too ) And I go to the beach year round. Yep, I mean... that IS the big reason why I moved here 16 years ago! 
One of the strangest things about living in Hawaii is sun guilt. I've heard people joke about it but it's real! I honestly look forward to stormy weather ( umm rare! ) just so I can get stuff done around the house! Bathrooms don't clean themselves, laundry still needs to be done, the cat has to get fed etc.
This's a difficult balance I tell you.

I also bring my one of my surfboards and SUP+Paddle, always. Sometimes they stay on top of the car but a lot of times they don't!

I'm always looking for suggestions when it comes to sunscreen for my face! If you have any good ones I would love to know! I need waterproof obvis...

Napili, Maui

Lately, as soon as my workweek ends I cannot wait to get over to the otherside of the island. The craziness of the summer crowds this year have driven me deep into the jungles of Haiku and the wind swept beaches of Maui's Northshore. I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I might be a wee bit excited that Labor Day is just around the corner. For someone who once upon a time dreamed about living in an Endless Summer, I now crave rainy days, long shadows, and early sunsets. Fall is beautiful in Hawaii and winter I like even more. I'm looking forward to the ( small ) change. I'm sure my crispy skin will be thanking me.
Today I was feeling a bit lazy and didn't feel like making the 1+ hour drive to the country for kombucha and window shopping. Instead, Carlos and I headed up to Napili Bay to take a dip in the crystalline waters that hug our own neighborhood. I think staying home paid off this time...

Olympia Activewear

I haven't purchased Lululemon since last November and Olympia Activewear is the reason why!

Love love love the neutral colors and silky fabrics. Love that these pieces feel amazing to workout in but I also love the fact that they can easily transition into comfy "running errands" wear. I also think it's super cool that the girl that designed Olympia Activewear is from Maui!! So great to see so many local girls these days making a name for themselves in the mainstream market!

Ya, I pretty much live in this stuff. Safe to say I bought most of the debut collection. Ouch.

Hi, I'm still here. I just took a long break from blogging. Truth is, besides being just lazy about it, I've been working on a concept for a new website. In the meantime though, I decided I wanted to start sharing things again. I've had a really busy late spring and even busier summer. I want to be honest, I've gotten a bit off track with the consistency of my diet and workout schedule that I mentioned last fall. Things like, off island vacations, family/friends visiting Maui, work demands, and an injury really threw me off my game. However, just writing this and seeing it on the screen is great motivation for me in itself.

Here's a little bit about whats been going on lately...

Am I still vegan ( oppose to a strict vegetarian )? In the last six months I have some eaten dairy ( not eggs). Fortunately, I can probably the count the amount of times I've eaten cheese ( it's always cheese ) on my two hands and I've never felt well afterward. I always feel puffy and bloated. But more than anything, I felt horribly guilty. I don't want to contribute to the suffering of innocent animals. I have to vote with my dollar on this one. The dairy industry is still just as cruel and disgusting as the meat industry in my book.

Have I eaten gluten? Yes! And again, it made me feel like crap. I want to blame a trip to northern California in June where I indulged a little too much in the delights of delicious Cali cuisine or this fantastic new Italian restaurant that just opened in Lahaina but that's just ridiculous. I went to California and Florida last November and stuck to my vegan/gluten free diet with ease. I just made some minor adjustments at restaurants and even dined out at several raw vegan establishments and juice bars. I could have done this again on this last trip but finding raw vegan food in Danville, CA vs Santa Monica, CA was a little too challenging for me I guess? So, ya, lame excuses. I will say I've had some form of bread or pasta once a week since spring. Not good.

My workouts. I'm still pretty consistent with this. In fact, I recently picked up tennis and ocean swimming/free diving with my new fins by DaFin Kicks. But, my recurring hip pain flared back up late spring and I had to put running on hold for a little bit. I'm back at it now, just taking it a bit easier these days. I'm still surfing, SUPing when the conditions are right of course. I'm also using the elliptical machine at the gym and lifting weights. The biggest thing I have neglected is yoga. I just seem to run out of time for this but I truly believe it's time to make in a weekly priority again.

Some other tidbits...

-WINE ugh!!! Ohhhhh I just love wine. But I swear, it just makes my face puffy. And let me let you, I'm feeling a bit puffy these days. I think it's time to cut it out again. Sucks.

-I'm still not drinking coffee that much however I have picked up an expensive Kombucha habit. We have the BEST kombucha in the world on this island and I'm so addicted. Thinking I should cut back on this. Any thought on kombucha?? I think I drink too much of it.

So, all the above has actually decreased a lot of the motivation I've had for blogging/writing. Pretty ridiculous because my blog was not all about my diet right?! AND the whole reason I even changed my diet in the first place was for a health issue! See post HERE. Anyway, I realized that there were so many things that I discovered over the last several months that I didn't share and I think that should change. Things like pretty beaches, island life, recent trips, cute things I've purchased, and healthy things I have made at home. If there is anything YOU would like me to write about, please let me know too! So, until I have my new website ready, I figured I should back into the swing of things.
