Wierd morning over here in the islands......I actually woke up at 6 am to the sound of our tsunami sirens blaring from across the street from my house. At first I thought I was just dreaming but then I heard my phone ringing too...

Then.... my cell service died...(great)...So, I connected my cable to find out what the hell was going on.

Oh, I also made a juice....
Green Juice

2 cups Maui Gold pineapple
1 Granny Smith apple
4 cups of kale
1/2 lemon

Holy crap this was good!

Anyway, back to the tsunami......

I didn't really know what to do at this point? I had to work but I work on the beach so I didn't know if I should go in or not? The waves were suppose to start hitting us at 11:26 so I figured I had time.
This is the scene at 7:45 am across the street from my house. It's the Kapalua airport and it looked as if people were already trying to find higher ground. ( but I was driving to my beach front office like an idiot of course )

Once I arrived I quickly figured out that we were closed....Duh. Really?
( So much for my freshly blow dried hair and make-up.....ahhhhhhh )

As I rushed back to my car the hotel's P.A. system was announcing instructions for the hotel's guests. I also found out they were closing all the roads...Shi#!

I made it home in time so we decided to head to our friend's house up the road.  Our house is in the "Tsunami Evacuation Zone" ( according to the Maui County phone book.....) so better safe than sorry I guess.....

Not to worry...Taj came too.

Now look at it! The water was rushing out sooooo fast! It was crazy!
Then, it would rush back in!

 This went on for about 2 hours. It was soooooo bizarre to watch!

Anyway, looks like we dogged the bullet this time. I'm sure we'll find out more tonight when reports come in from across the state.....strange day in Hawaii.

Our tsunami today was generated by a 8.8 magnitude earthquake over 6,000 miles away.....Looks like Chile is in for a long haul. So very sad.........I'm sure we'll all find out a lot more about this devestating quake over the next few days......Hoping for the best right now.

Laundry, Taxes, and VOG.....

The VOG is back.....and it's bad ( blah! ) Infact, it's so bad that we decided to spend most of the day inside taking care of some much needed biz ( like laundry, mopping, weeding and organizing my TAXES Ugh! ) Oh well, we need to get to this stuff eventually and after all the sun we got yesterday, it's probably best we stay in the shade.
But,  I did get up a little early to get first dibs at the Honokowai Farmer's Market.....
See the pale voggie sky behind the little church? Yuck.

This dude was wacking coconuts open with a machete....He seemed to be having a much easier time than I was last week...Maybe I'll eventually just pay him to open mine?

Our Bounty...
 ( pretty much all local and organic )

4 Navel oranges
2 lemons
1 large head of Red Leaf lettuce
1 head of Romaine
2 bags of grape tomatoes
1 bag Kula arugula ( Rocket )
1/2 green cabbage
1/2 purple cabbage
4 of the largest carrots I've ever seen!
4 ears of Kula sweet white corn
fresh ginger
2 zucchinis
2 cucumbers
3 bunches of kale
1 loaf vegan "Maui Crunch" whole grain bread
Total Damage $45.92 ( not bad I think? )

I wasn't hungry for breakfast so instead I had an early lunch in between loads of laundry.... 
Yes...more Pineapple-Cucumber Gaspacho! Love it!
However, instead of adding Macadamia oil to the top I added 1/2 of a Haas avocado to give it richness. Mmmmm....I also added a squeeze of lime, red pepper flakes and some Pink Australian Salt.

After gardening I shared some Chocolate Chia Seed Pudding with Carlos....
1/4 c white chia seeds
3/4 c almond milk
1/4 tsp vanilla
1 Tb raw cacao powder
dash of cinnamon
pinch of salt
1 packet of Stevia
1 Tb agave

Stir all ingredients together and place in fridge for 3+ hours or overnight.
The chia seeds will expand and turn "gelatinous" almost like tapioca...This was awesome!

Chia seeds are super high in omega-3s, protein and fiber!

Surf Report

Voggy light "Kona" conditions today but the surf was up and we were on it :-)

Before heading out I made a super yummy juice for Carlos and I....
2 small organic beets
4 organic carrots
2" local fresh ginger
3 organic oranges
small piece of local lemon
2 tsp Maca

Hours later.....
For lunch I went to the Honokowai Farmer's Market to check out their daily hot bar.
So yummy! BBQ Tofu and Asian Barley Stir Fry for $6.67

And an Aloha Apple Ice Tea :-)

We headed out again before sunset to check for more surf but the tide was rising and we were pretty sunburned and tired.....( I spy VOG! )

Dinner was healthy and light....
Green leafed lettuce with a Haas Avocado and Annie's "Goddess" Dressing ( FYI- nice combo )

And a glass of "Monkey Bay" NZ Sauv Blanc....
Anyway....I'm off to bed now. Carlos passed out long ago but not before watching women's Figure Skating with me. Honestly, I have to give the guy props....he endured 2 nights of "Ice Dancing" this week as well......( and liked it ). Gotta love my guy :-)

Happy Monday

Aloha "Friday"!

Yey for days off!! It's been a looooong week and by 3pm today I was more than ready to start my weekend:-)

This morning I had a "Raw Food Real World" inspired smoothie....

Unfortunately due to copy right laws I cannot reprint the recipe but I'll give you a hint....
It contains... frozen bananas, fresh carrot juice, nut milk,  ginger and it?
It's titled "Bunny Spice" and it's on page 81.

Oh-FYI, I also added a tsp of Sol Raiz Organic's Maca...

If you are interested in a vegan raw food diet I highly recommend picking up "Raw Food Real World" by Matthew Kinney and Sarma Melngailis. They are the brilliant chefs behind NYC's famous, "Pure Food and Wine".....
Anyway, I use it all the time for inspiration:-)

Outside my office mid morning....typical beautiful winter day out here on Maui....

Lunch...Can you guess?
The Usual
1 cup cottage cheese
1/2 chopped tomatoes
2 slices whole wheat bread

Oh...I almost forgot, BFF brought in these interesting Chinese "Cakes" for us to sample...

Mine was "melon" flavor....
Probably not the healthiest thing in the world but they were pretty small....yummy!

On the way home today I stopped at my favorite little fruit stand up in Kapalua and grabbed myself $3 worth of local limes...

Cute huh!

I was really excited to find that my package of Superfoods from was sitting on my doorstep! That was super fast! Only a few days to get to Hawaii! I'm impressed.....I'll use again for sure:-)

I'm really excited to experiment with these so I'll get more into detail about them when I do :-)

Also, a friend of ours dropped off 2 local "Maui Gold" pineapples! Apparently he had a few too many on his hands....score!

So, thanks to my surpise gift...I decided to make another "Raw Food Real World" inspired dish!

Now, I didn't have enough ingredients on hand to follow the exact recipe so I had to improvise....
So, Here's my version of Matthew's and Sarma's
Pineapple-Cucumber Gazpacho.

5 cups chopped pineapple
1 cup chopped cucumber
2 cups chopped Granny Smith apples
1 cup - half pineapple juice, half green apple juice
1 Tb chopped chives ( my garden! )
1/2 small Maui onion
1 Thai Dragon chili ( my garden! )
1 Tb local lime juice
2 tsp sea salt
1.5 Tb macadamia nut oil
1 handful cilantro

In a high speed blender blend 4 cups pineapple, 1 cup cucumber, 1 cup apples, juice, chives, onion, chili, salt, and lime juice.

Next add 1 cup pineapple, 1 cup apple, cilantro and oil and "pulse" a few times to blend but have the  gazpacho remain "chunky"

Serve with hot pepper flakes and a drizzle of Macadamia Nut oil ( this is added a lot of richness to the dish! )

Happy to know that I have plenty of leftovers because this was AMAZING!
I love light raw food....If money was no object I would eat this way all the time!

Anyway....thinking of grabbing Taj now and throwing a movie the, be back soon!
