There are a couple favor combinations in this world that are just really meant to be. Chocolate and Mint, Lemon and Butter, Beets and Goat Cheese, Avocado and Cilantro, etc. I can name about 20 more but I want to focus on a combination I use over and over.... Asparagus and Mushrooms. I don't know what it is but I crave these two veggies together. There is just something so comforting about the earthiness of a firm Mushroom and the crispy green taste of an asparagus. Mushrooms are the vegetarians answer to meat. They are dense and grill up very well. They absorb flavors beautifully and there are so many kinds to experiment with. I'm obsessed with the meaty Shiitake. They are gorgeous brown on the outside and spongy white inside. I LOVE slicing them up and throwing them in Asian soups or searing them in olive oil, Italian parsley and garlic for a simple side dish. I grew up in the East Bay suburbs of San Fransisco ( Lafayette and Danville ) and being a native Californian I took for granted the large variety of agriculture in my home state ( until I moved to the tropics ). The abundance of locally grown produce seemed "normal" because this is all I knew. I've learned that it's not like that everywhere.... I am terrified of airplanes ( still am ) and for years my parents would have to shuffle my sister and I between my father's Los Angeles beach house and my mother's northern California home because I simply refused to fly. So, about 4 times a year we made the 6 hour trek up and down California's Highway 101. When we were not hugging the beach we were winding through California's fertile farmlands. Places like, Gilroy-"The Garlic Capital of the World", Monterrey County with it's proud almond and apple orchards, the San Luis Obispo Wine Country, the world's strawberry capital in Oxnard, the gourmet banana plantations in La Conchita and finally Greenfield, CA where the best Asparagus on the planet grows. Asparagus was just about the only veggie I LOVED as a kid and I still relish it. It's bright, it's springtime, it's California and nothing compliments my most favorite veggie like the hearty mushroom. I love pairing the two in Risotto, Soups and Pasta. Here is a simple recipe I threw together the other night.
SIMPLE SHIITAKE AND ASPARAGUS PASTA-VEGETARIAN 1 LB Dry Pasta cooked until al dente in salted water 1 large bunch of very fresh Asparagus, woody ends snapped off and cut into 1" pieces 2 Cups Shiitake Mushrooms sliced 2 cloves minced garlic Juice and Zest of one lemon Olive oil Shaved Pecorino Romano ( or omit for Vegans ) salt/pepper
Place 1 TB olive oil in large nonstick on med heat place sliced mushrooms in pan and DO NOT MOVE until golden brown on the bottoms. Add minced garlic and saute until mixed. Sprinkle with salt and cracked pepper. Add asparagus. saute about 2 minutes. DO NOT OVER COOK ASPARAGUS. This is KEY! Asparagus should be bright green when done and still a bit crispy. Add Mushrooms and Asparagus to cooked/drained pasta. Toss with Lemon juice and Zest. Add as much shaved cheese as you like ( Crumbly Feta Cheese goes great with this too! )

Dinner-Chili Pea Puffs- A loosly followed recipe in the Book "Modern Spice" by Monica Bhide ( I subbed Goat cheese for Indian Paneer and baked them instead of frying )and added store bought sweet hot chili sauce. Quick Note: I love this sweet chili sauce but it is REALLY sweet. A lot of the time I pour about a 1/2 Cup of the stuff into a small bowl and add the juice of one lime and chopped cilantro. The lime cuts down the sweetness. Another pretty and tasty presentation is to sprinkle the dip with chopped peanuts:-)

Breakie-"Green Monster" ( 3 cups frozen kale, 1 TB organic peanut butter, 1 cup almond milk, 1 packet of stevia, 1 frozen banana, 1 scoop "Amazing Grass" )-A new green smoothie recipe from the blog "EAT LIVE RUN". I purchased a green/antioxidant blend from an organic line called "Amazing Grass" that the blogger recommends as a supplement. The new green smoothie tasted REALLY different than my version but it was really good too ( BTW-you can't taste the green stuff at all.)
Lunch-"Joy's Place" in Kihei -Veggie Sandwitch (Sprouted Bread, sprouts, carrots, cucumber, 1 slice of Provolone cheese, hummus, tomato and veganaise). Joy's Place is a small deli in south Maui that specializes in whole/vegan/vegatarian and living foods.
Dinner-"Marc Aurel's" in Wailuku - "Odessey Platter" ( shared with Carlos ) hummus, tzaziki, olive tapenade, vegan dolmas, pita bread, mixed olives, roasted peppers, marinated artichokes and 2 Glasses of Babich New Zealand Sauv Blanc We were on the "other side" of the island all day car shopping so we stopped at a favorite wine bar of ours "Cafe Marc Aurel's" on Market St.

Dinner-Amy's Organic "Vegan Black Bean and Veggie Enchilada" I was at work and forgot to bring food for dinner. I went to foodland and they were out of my usual Veggie Sushi so I decided to try one these instead ( 2 small enchiladas in a box ). I never eat frozen food or use a microwave ( I don't even have one ) but I do at work so I gave this a try. I was REALLY GREAT!! I will get this again for sure!
** I'm not sure what was wrong with me but my stomach felt like crap all day long...ever since I had my "Green Monster" breakfast?? I didn't feel this way yesterday so I don't know if the "Monster" is the reason? I had 2 Excedrines this a.m. too. Who knows??... but I still feel icky ( and it's 11:30 pm. I wasn't supper sick or anything like that. I still wanted lunch and dinner but just not too much. However, I didn't want to go to the gym before work because I felt so crappy... Yuck.....plus, I had to work on my day off.... double yuck... Oh well.............
Lately I've been getting into a horrible habit of going to bed way too late. When Carlos and I work the evening shifts at our galleries we don't get home until after 10pm and sometimes we end up taking several hours to unwind. Last night was no exception. We have been car shopping online ( more on that another time ) and before we knew it was 2 am again. Unfortunately for me, as soon as the sun rises the next morning I am awake. It doesn't matter if I went to bed at 9pm or 4am, my body's alarm clock goes off around 6 am. Carlos doesn't seem have this issue (of course). So here I am...blurry eyed and on the computer at 7 and I can hear Carlos snoring at the other end of the house. I have a feeling I will be feeling a bit tired later on today! Like I have said before, I have no access to my blog on my work computer:-(. So, my posts are less frequent then they used to be ( I'm trying to get more disciplined at home ).....Yesterday, I got home late ( no blog ) and on Wednesday we went to the Maui Film Festival (www.mauifilmfestival.com) in Wailea and left straight from work at 4pm ( sort of "Sundance" meets palm trees and surf ). This is the 10 year anniversary of this cool event here on Maui and for some ridiculous reason I have NEVER been. We really wanted to go to the first night of the event because all the "Surf" movies were being shown ( outside, under the stars on a Wailea golf course ). The festival started at 8pm with a hula dance show and these 3 documentaries followed.... High Water The Women and the Waves Waveriders My personal fave of the night was the first movie "High Water" (www.vanssurf.com/highwater/ ) by the famous Brown family ( "Endless Summer" and "Step into Liquid" ). "High Water" was a documentary on the last 6 weeks of the surfing Pro Tour season that ends here in my islands. Both the Men's and Women's event were covered. Every December and January the "Vans Triple Crown" is held at Haleiewa and Sunset Beach, North Shore, Oahu. The third wave in the Men's event is the famous Pipeline and the women head over to Maui to surf our beautiful Honolua Bay ( just up the road from my house ) Luckily, I have made it to the women's event almost every year! The Brown family always tells a great story and "High Water" was no different. There is a lot of tales told about coming to Hawaii and surfing the waves and dealing with the locals. Some of the things you hear are true and some are not so true. However, all in all surfing in Hawaii is the real deal. We are sitting in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on top of a volcano. The ocean out here is a powerful thing. Even on the small days you can have your ass handed to you. I have surfed all over the world now...Mexico, California, Tahiti, Samoa, The Cook Islands and Australia and let me tell you this...Hawaii is different. We don't have any continental shelf or extensive reef to soften our blow. If you can master surfing here you will be able to take on the world:-) I highly recommend catching this flick if you can. Anyways, I have not worked out in 2 days....I hate that, but I plan on doing something today whether I go to the gym or get in the water. I think we might be expecting an out of season northwest swell this afternoon....Aloha my friends:-)

Long Tuesday at the gallery....Lot's of marketing to do and emailing. I didn't make it in the ocean or to the gym today but I booked Carlos and I 1 hour massages at Maui Zen Day Spa after work. We are both suffering from bad backs and I figured this might help.... Since, I was so busy at work I didn't get to order any lunch. Good thing I brought a granola bar in! By the time I got home ( 6pm ) I was starving and quickly threw dinner together in 20 minutes with stuff from the pantry and garden. I SOOOO HAVE TO GET TO A HEALTH FOOD STORE SOON! I'm running out of all my veggies and fruit rations. In spite of this...dinner was really good. We both went back for seconds. I made a healthier version of a vodka sauce ( minus the vodka and cream ) and I'm SUPER stuffed right now!

ALMOST HOMEMADE "Creamy Penne Marinara"VEGETARIAN
1 LB of Organic Wheat Pasta cooked for 11 min with salted water. 1 Jar Tomato Basil Sauce ( Classico Brand )
**Add below ingredients to sauce on stove top in large pot (med heat) 1 TB Organic Balsamic Vinegar 1/2 tsp. Sea Salt 4 cloves minced garlic 1/2 tsp. Hot Pepper Flakes 1/2 Cup of Goat Cheese
Stir until Goat Cheese is incorporated. Mix in cooked Penne. Top with lots of fresh chopped Basil.
Aloha my friends:-) Happy Monday! I'm back to work today after playing "nurse" all weekend. I felt bad leaving the boy to fend for himself with his awful back but I had no choice. Luckily he did make it into the Docs and it looks like he is suffering from classic back spasms. He's going to have to stay out of the water and off his feet for a bit so he can heal up. I want him strong and healthy for our upcoming surf trip in September and I'm sure I'll get no arguments from him on that account! I was not able to make my weekly pilgrimage to a farmer's market or big health food store this weekend ( because I live on an island and they are an hour away ) so I'm making due with my staples at home...I've been suffering from a tight back too ( we must be getting old ) after my injury last week surfing so yesterday and today I stuck with the Elliptical Machine at the gym.

Dinner-Caesar Salad ( sort of...) All I wanted tonight was a big cold simple salad. I'm seriously out of everything produce wise so I made a huge salad out of a whole head of Romaine ( Cos ) and Paul Newmans' Oil and Vinegar Dressing( the BEST go to salad dressing on the market! ) and some grated Pecorino Romano Cheese**. I then crumbled some "Mary's Gone Crackers" Flax seed crackers on top as mock croutons....perfect! Oh! and a Glass of Monkey Bay Sauv Blanc!

Quick Note** I almost ALWAYS sub Pecorino Romano Cheese in for Parmesan Cheese for a couple of reasons. 1. It's stronger, saltier and sharper so I don't use as much 2. It's usually half the price of Parm. Gotta love that!
I can't believe that a whole week has gone by since my last post but it appears to be true....I've been dealing with a crazy stressful week at work along with nursing a sore back. As a result my blog had to take a backseat. Starting last Sunday the Hawaiian Islands finally started getting some real summer ( southern ) surf. On Monday, I was surfing off hwy 30 when my back freezed up after a wave and I had no choice but to paddle back in. I missed great surf all week long as a result. As of yesterday I've been back in the water. I surfed "Guard Rails" for about 1.5 hrs on my 7'8". I didn't want to push it so I got out sooner than I wanted to. However, Carlos ended up crawling out of the water 4 hrs later with his back or hips totally out of wack! I have no idea what he did but he seriously cannot move? It looks as if one hip is higher than the other? I'm going to either insist that he go see his chiropractor or my massage therapist today if there is no improvement when he wakes up.....total nightmare My last post was about the Maui Mall Farmer's Market. Unfortunately, I think I over bought. I ended up tossing the Jicama, about 6 tomatoes, a bundle of asparagus and a red pepper. I was pretty bummed about this because it kills me to waste food. I think if I had had a normal week ( no injury ) this would not have happened. Cooking seemed like too much work ( for my back ) and I ended up eating a lot of Green Papaya Salads from Thai Chef instead. However, I did end up making my "Pot Stickers", some salads, stir fries and a great pasta that I will post the recipe for ( as soon as I get pics up )so I guess my shopping trip last Friday was not a total loss. Aloha everyone, I ended up taking the day off today to finally enjoy a much needed 3 day weekend. I decided the first thing I wanted to do ( besides having to stop at the vets for cat food ) was finally check out the farmers market at the Maui Mall in Kahului! Totally worth the drive! I think I scored! The farmers market was MUCH bigger than I expected it to be. They had everything from Poholi Ferns to Strawberry Papayas ( Paw Paw ) and a lot of things that I've never seen before! Tons of Filipino veggies and squashes as well as baked goods like Lumpia and Mochi. I have not been to a Farmer's Market on the Mainland for years and I know the California ones rock! But, there is something really quaint and very Asian about the markets in Hawaii that make going to them such a treat! MY BOUNTY-Mostly Kula, Maui grown 2 Local Avocados ( VERY LARGE ROUND VARIETY ) Bag of Roma Tomatoes ( 25 count! for $5 ) 2 Cucumbers 1 Bag of Shiitaki Mushrooms ( about 15 ) 1 Bag of White Mushrooms ( about 15 ) 1 large Bunch Green Onions 1 Red Onion 5 Maui Onions 5 Bulbs of Garlic for $1 ! 2 large bunches of Asparagus 1 large Jicama 1 Bag of Orange Carrots ( 4 ) 2 Purple Okinawan Sweet Potatoes 4 Heads of Romaine ( Cos ) 1 Napa Cabbage 1 very large Bunch of Cilantro ( Coriander ) 3 large Red Bell Peppers 1 bag of Sugar Snap Peas 3 Heads of Broccoli All of this cost a total of $48 bucks. I think if I bought this at Mana Foods in Paia it would have been AT LEAST DOUBLE!!!I just hope I can get through all of this food before it goes bad! There were so many more things I wanted to grab but I really had to control myself! Next time maybe... Oh by the way...I didn't go crazy on the fruit because I have a ton of it at the house at the moment. Mango season has started and the trees are dripping! I have 8 semi ripe Mangoes in a basket outside along with a huge bunch of local Apple Bananas.' After the Farmers Market I stopped at Down to Earth to grab a quick bite. I had an Artichoke Pasta Salad that was "ok" but it was $5.21 for a really small portion so I don't think I would buy it again.Then, I made the 40 min drive back to Lahaina ( so pretty I stopped to take a pic in Olowalu ) Then, I stopped in Lahaina to check out a new Brazilian Bikini Shop on Front St. I couldn't resist so I purchased a bright turquoise bikini and an extra black bottom! The brand is San Lorenzo ( name of the shop too ) and they are hot! They were not cheap at $42 per item but they let me split up the suits because I'm an XL top and a S bottom. I don't like to shop at stores that don't let me do that....I usually buy solid color suites and totally mix and match them:-) I'll be going back to shop there again....

Sometimes it just seems as if nothing is in your favor....We woke up to a flawless Maui day but being Wednesday, work is first and playtime is second. Cruising into Lahaina at 9 a.m we noticed glassy chest high sets coming into "Harbors".. bummer..I was hoping it was flat. Do you have any idea how freaking hard it is to go to work when there is surf and sun right outside your office? It seriously turns into the longest day ever!
Finally 4 pm arrives! Woo Hoo! ( yes, I know.... I only work a 6.5 hr day BUT IT SEEMS WAAAAY LONGER! )and conditions have diminished considerably.....high tide + onshore wind = crumbly crap! Note to self***don't sleep in Thursday morning So what to do now? Go home, nap and then go back to Lahaina for Thai Chef!

It was cold cubes of beet root marinated in a a light vinaigrette with Mizuna lettuce. It was then topped with a nut crusted ball of creamy chevre. YUMMMMMMM *About 3 bites of Carlos's Chocolate souffle *2 Glasses of Tiera Sauv Blanc FYI-Carlos had the Soup of the Day ( Creamy Carrot Ginger! ) the Fillet Mignon and finished with Chocolate Souffle with macadamia nut ice cream! "When it rains it pours!"...After having an incredibly stressful week I ended my weekend ( actually working on my day off ) with Carlos cruising into my gallery to let me know that his truck broke down and was stuck in a parking lot in Lahaina. Awesome....not only did his truck break down but we are suspecting it broke down for good. So, now we are juggling our work schedules with my little Honda Civic until he decides what he wants to do about a new vehicle. In the meantime however I will have to stick to regular surfing because there is no way in hell I'm strapping that 11'6" Stand Up paddle board onto the roof of my car with soft racks ( I'm secretly devastated at the moment ) I'm in the process of ordering custom Thule Racks for the Civic but I only have 2 of the 5 parts that I need to complete the project. Did you know that custom surf racks cost about $500?! So, to cut the cost down we've been ordering the parts individually on eBay...So far it's taken 2 months to find just 2 parts.....sweet Anyways, Lucky for me the Hawaiian Islands are expecting a real South Swell from the South Pacific ( if the BIG ISLAND doesn't block it! )to roll into our reefs this evening. Hence, I will be using my shortboard ( hopefully ) through the end of the week and weekend.
On to another topic.....So, I've been getting a few questions about weight loss and I wanted to comment back a little bit about this. First of all, I am not a RD or a nutritionist of any sort. Also, I'm not a personal trainer. Now, all these fields do interest me very much and I might look into these types of career paths in the future but for the moment I am speaking about my own experiences. What I do have in my arsenal is an almost 15 yr struggle with my weight and diet. Over the last 7-8 yrs I have managed to conquer this with diet, exercise and awareness. I need to make an important note about this. I work everyday, very hard to maintain my health. It takes time, dedication and patience to make a lifestyle change. I do not consider myself being on a "diet" This is just my way of life now. I really could not imagine my world with fast food and meat and no exercise. I think that everyone's makeup is unique and what works for me might not for you but adding more raw fruit and vegetables into your day along with exercise will make you healthier in the long run whether you lose weight or not ( although you probably will! ) Here are some rules that I live by... 1. I usually start my days with a Green Smoothie of some sort. By doing this I'm ensuring that I am eating at lease one Raw Vegan meal a day. 2. I do a major shopping trip once a week and wash and cut my veggies and fruit. I make a "Salad Mix" of several leafy green, herbs and edible flowers and bag them for easy salads ( FYI-these are fun and pretty! ) 3. I take make my own meals to take to work ( most of the time ). This can be time consuming to prepare so do it the night before if you must but not only does this ensure I have a healthy meal ready it saves me money. 4. I DO NOT have snack food in the house....period! 5. I DO NOT eat when I'm not hungry. Simple but this is a real figure saver! 6. I weigh myself about every other day. This helps me to stay in range. If I start creeping past the "5 lb mark" I analyze what might have caused this. But, I really don't stress much about the number anymore. It's really about how my jeans fit or how I feel in my bikini. I wear a bikini almost everyday all year round so I might be more conscious than most people :-) 7. I workout. I'm not a huge gym fan but if the surf is flat or if it's pouring rain it's nice to have that membership. I consider the ocean to be my gym and I use it as often as possible. 8. Sleep...I get about 7-8 hrs a night 9. Enjoy your wine and dessert. I love wine and I will always drink it. If I have to have something sweet I'll have that too. Life's too short to deprive yourself from things like this......just cut back somewhere else if need be 10. Embrace your curves.....I know my man wishes I had more.... All this being said....I'll say this again, I was once 142 lbs. Today I weighed in at a normal 105 lbs. I'm almost 5'6". I LOVE food...I just made wiser choices over the last few years and I think it has helped:-) xo
